Bloom & Wild – DIY Christmas Crackers

Christmas is a time for joy, laughter, and those little traditions that make the season special—like pulling crackers at the dinner table. But while these colourful novelties bring a spark of fun, they also come with an environmental cost that’s hard to ignore. For many of us who dream of a festive season that’s kinder and gentler to the planet, it’s time to rethink how we celebrate.

This year, why not swap store-bought crackers for a DIY approach? Not only is it an opportunity to reduce waste, but it’s also a chance to add a personal, heartfelt touch to your holiday celebrations. Whether you’re crafting with family or creating unique surprises for guests, making your own crackers is a wonderfully creative way to keep the Christmas spirit alive—without the guilt.

According to Business Waste, 40 million crackers end up in the bin on the 25th Dec, contributing to the millions of tonnes of waste thrown away each year over the festive period.

So, what can you do if you want to create less waste, but still get into the Christmas spirit? According to Mark Hall, founder of Business Waste, ditching shop-bought crackers and making your own is a better solution.

With this in mind, online gift and flower specialists, Bloom & Wild have created a handy step-by-step guide on how to create your own waste-less Christmas crackers.

What you’ll need for your crackers

  • Your favourite wrapping paper (check to make sure it’s recyclable)
  • A cardboard tube (an empty loo roll works perfectly)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Cracker snaps
  • Double-sided tape
  • Pen
  • Ribbon

Step 1:

Start by cutting a 30 by 20cm piece from your chosen paper.

Step 2:

Time to make some folds! On each short end, draw three lines: one 5cm in, then two more 2cm apart. Fold along these lines.

Step 3:

Now for the fun bit – pinch 2cm sections to create little peaks, then tuck the 5cm sections underneath. It’s starting to look cracker-shaped!

Step 4:

Let’s add some flair. Snip triangles along the bottom edge, leaving small gaps between. Do the same on the other side.

Step 5:

Pop some double-sided tape on either end of your middle section.

Step 6:

Grab your cardboard tube and add in a prize to the tube (ideas: handwritten jokes, Christmas hats, or small gift). Attach the tube to one side.

Step 7:

Roll the tube with the paper to the other side.

Step 8:

Pop a cracker snap inside (this is what makes the ‘pop’!) and secure with tape. Make sure to tape down either end of the paper too.

Step 9:

For the finishing touch, pinch the cut-out sections and wrap a ribbon around them.

And there you have it! Your very own, beautifully crafted Christmas cracker. Perfect for adding a personal touch to your festive table, or as a thoughtful handmade gift.

Crafting your own Christmas crackers is more than just a creative activity—it’s a meaningful way to celebrate the season with intention and care. By embracing small, sustainable changes like this, you can make the season feel even more magical—for your loved ones and the planet alike.

These delightful, waste-less crackers can add a personal touch to your table, while also serving as a reminder that the holidays are about thoughtfulness, from handmade traditions to meaningful gift-giving. Whether they’re adorning your table or bringing smiles to loved ones, these crackers are a reminder that the holidays can be as thoughtful as they are festive.
